With only a week left until the MLB trade deadline, teams are running out of time to decide what they plan to do with their rosters.
For the Los Angeles Dodgers, the roster is solid enough that they can remain “opportunistic,” as president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman described it , while waiting for other teams to make up their minds.
One superstar who’s frequently been linked to the Dodgers is Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, a back-to-back Cy Young winner who will be a free agent after this season.
The question facing the Tigers is a simple one, though it could determine the future of the franchise for years to come: Is the team good enough to compete with Skubal this season, or are the Tigers better off trading Skubal to another team and instead focusing on rebuilding for future years with young talent?
Time is ticking, so here’s how long the Tigers have left to decide.
A cascading waterfall of choices
As detailed by ESPN’s Buster Olney , drawing out this process is beneficial for all involved — except for the team that ultimately would land him in a trade.
“Even if the Phillies, Braves, Cubs or Dodgers don’t land Skubal, they’ll want to remain in the market for as long as possible to help push the potential cost for a rival team,” he wrote.
That also provides more time for the Tigers front office to try to suss out their best path forward.
After all, they’re 3.5 games out of a wild card spot, and Skubal would certainly help in the playoffs.

But if they miss the playoffs with Skubal on the roster, they’ll lose him to free agency with nothing to show for it.
Given that, executives told Olney they expect the Tigers to wait until the end of the week to make a decision.
“If they wait until Friday to make that decision, that’ll leave them plenty of time to make a deal,” one official said. “Three full days, plus Monday — that’s an eternity.”
So gear up for several days of waiting, Dodgers fans. Your Skubal questions might not have an answer for up to a week.
