Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon future in doubt after Champions League disappointment?
There is set to be a series of changes at Lyon after their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and one of those could potentially be in the coaching department, according to L’Équipe . Paulo Fonseca is considered one of the most intruiging head coaches in Europe, yet a series of constant failures at the pivotal moment with OL could see his position come under increasing scrutiny.
Les Gones suffered another disappointment under the Portuguese head coach as they were knocked out by Fenerbahçe in the final stages of qualifying after a 3-2 aggregate defeat. This isn’t the first time OL have underwhelmed in Europe under Fonseca’s leadership, including a late collapse against Manchester United and an inadequate performance against Celta Vigo which saw them bow out of the UEFA Europa League perhaps prematurely in consecutive seasons.
Fonseca to leave at the end of the season?
The former Lille head coach’s current contract is set to expire at the end of this season. With Lyon forced to improve their financial status, and without the influx of cash that the Champions League brings, an exit for the former Roma head coach is plausible at the end of his contract as OL look to cut their wage bill.
