From a disappointed Spurs supporter’s perspective, this is a familiar and frustrating read. Tottenham have “maintained contact”, they “would welcome the opportunity”, and there is even a suggestion that if Ferran Torres came back to England then “a move to London would be his preferred destination”. Yet somehow it still feels like Spurs are hovering around the edges while PSG drive the deal.
That is the hard part to accept. Torres looks exactly the sort of attacker Tottenham should be able to sell a proper sporting project to, versatile, experienced, productive and still at a good age. If Barcelona are prepared to sell and the player is open to London, why does it feel as though Spurs are waiting for permission rather than setting the pace?
Supporters will read this and worry that Tottenham are once again being positioned as the backup option, the club that checks in, keeps contact and monitors developments, while another side with real conviction takes control. PSG have Luis Enrique making a personal pitch. Spurs, from the outside, appear interested but not influential.
There is still a chance if the Paris move stalls, but that is hardly reassuring. Fans want Tottenham to act like a destination, not a contingency. Torres could improve the front line straight away, and this report leaves the impression that Spurs know it. The problem is that knowing it and getting the deal done are two very different things.
