See the full story · 4 sourcesIn the DC Universe, justice usually arrives in the form of bickering, brightly colored do-gooders, but in HBO Max’s newest DC Studios series, The People V. Gorilla Grodd , it’s getting served through the power of the press—Jimmy Olsen style.
HBO Max announced an eight-episode order for the series on Friday, confirming that American Vandal star Jimmy Tatro will play the eponymous DC supervillain, Gorilla Grodd, who finds himself at the center of a public imbroglio after being convicted, perhaps wrongly, of “murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.” The People V. Gorilla Grodd , previously known by the working title DC Crime , will reunite most of the Planet bullpen, including Superman standout Skylar Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, who will hopefully have more to do in this series than gnaw on his signature stogie as he did throughout Superman .
Joining the main cast in unspecified roles are Mary Holland ( The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window ), Eduardo Franco ( Hoppers , American Vandal ), Arian Moayed ( Nobody Wants This ), Dan Perrault ( American Vandal ), Andrew Leeds ( Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist ), and Tim Baltz ( Widow’s Bay ).
American Vandal ‘s Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are an exceptionally inspired choice to set loose on this corner of the still-forming DC Universe, taking the mockumentary format they nailed in Vandal and applying it to an investigative series akin to Serial, filtered through the prism of Silver Age irreverence that made Jimmy Olsen— and apes! —such enduring DC Comics staples.
The announcement comes after some much-needed good press for DC Studios, whose latest live-action HBO series, Lanterns , scored positive reviews and drew an impressive 9.3 million three-day viewership for its premiere last Sunday.
