Why Broderick Jones is Omar Khan's most intriguing trade asset
As Pittsburgh Steelers training camp draws near, much of the offensive focus centers on the positional battles along the offensive line. However, beneath the anticipation of daily practice lies a higher-stakes strategic reality: former first-round tackle Broderick Jones could emerge as general manager Omar Khan’s top trade chip if the season takes an unexpected turn.
According to Christopher Carter on his “ Locked on Steelers ” podcast, the primary catalyst for Jones’ shifting outlook is a major upfront realignment. With Troy Fautanu moving to left tackle, Jones is forced back to the right side, where he must battle for reps.
“I do believe as long as Broderick Jones is healthy, he's going to be given a shot to start this year, most likely at right tackle, where he's going to have to battle it out with Dylan Cook primarily to win that position. And partially because the Steelers have now flipped Troy Fautanu to left tackle,” said Carter.
If Fautanu secures the left tackle spot and Jones struggles with consistency or health, his long-term tenure in Pittsburgh becomes uncertain. Having already declined his fifth-year option, the front office faces a critical decision regarding his asset value before it depreciates.
“If the Steelers said, 'Hey, you know what? There's no way we're keeping him.’ They have already refused to give him the fifth-year option,” added Carter. “‘We can't afford to pay him with all the other guys we're looking to pay. You know what? Here's what we're going to do. We're going to trade him away and get some get some value.'”
While first-round tackles are rarely moved early in their careers, Jones’ athletic profile and age make him highly attractive to offensive-line-needy contenders across the NFL. Should Pittsburgh find itself selling at the deadline, Jones presents a rare trade piece capable of netting valuable draft capital.
Carter finished by saying, “By and large, I think that the Broderick Jones is part of a group of players that Omar Khan might be looking at as far as a short list of guys that he could move if things went south for the Steelers this year and they had to be sellers rather than buyers as they get closer to the trade deadline.”
