The San Francisco 49ers had been in talks for weeks about bringing back fan-favorite wide receiver Deebo Samule back to the Bay Area.
Once it was revealed former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall was considering surgery to fix his PCL injury, signing Samuel become even more important for San Francisco’s chances of competing in 2026.
While the 30-year-old wideout isn’t the same caliber of player he was a few years ago when he made his first Pro Bowl, he’s still explosive enough and dynamic enough to add some new wrinkle’s to the 49ers offense and make opposing defensive coordinators game plan a little harder.
Samuel signed a one-year deal to return to San Francisco, and while his base salary may be a little lower than some would’ve though ($3.27 million), the former second-round pick has a chance to earn up to $7 million through the number of incentives worked into his deal, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
For each regular season game he plays, Samuel will earn a $20,000 bonus. If he plays the full season, he’ll pocket a cool $340,000.
If Samuel scores six regular-season touchdowns, that’s another $200,000 bonus, but he’ll pocket a $450,000 bonus if he scores seven or more regular-season TDs. Those numbers will also double if the 49ers reach the postseason.
He’ll receive another $200,000 bonus if he totals between 600 and 802 yards from scrimmage. That number will escalate to $450,000 if his yards from scrimmage reaches 803 yards or more. If San Francisco reaches the playoffs, those amounts will double.
Should Samuel rank in the top 10 in average yards per kick return, he’ll earn another $250,000 bonus, though he has to return at least 20 kicks. If he accomplishes that feat and San Francisco makes the playoffs, he’ll get an additional $250,000 bonus.
Samuel can also earn yet another $250,000 bonus for playing at least 68% of San Francisco’s offensive snaps. He’ll get another $250K if he accomplishes that feat and the 49ers reach the playoffs.
And finally, he can earn a $100,000 bonus if he’s voted to the Pro Bowl in any capacity on the initial ballot.
