News of the New England Patriots trading Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans this preseason hit DeMario Douglas hard.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Mike Kadlick, Douglas stated after practice on Tuesday that the Boutte deal was difficult for him to take in.
“It was tough,” Douglas said. “That’s who I came in [the league] with. That’s my brother, my forever brother.”
Douglas and Boutte were both selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The two helped New England finish with the best record in the NFL in 2025 at 14-3 and reach the Super Bowl after going 4-13 in each of their first two seasons in the league.
Boutte’s name was involved in trade speculation throughout the offseason prior to him being dealt to Houston. He was a pivotal starter for the team in their road to the Super Bowl last season, but he was in a crowded wide receiver room in New England, which enabled the team to push the button and trade him to Houston.
Douglas and the Patriots will now move forward without Boutte in town for next season. The trade opens the door for Douglas to earn more snaps in the slot, with Boutte having been positioned to play both in the slot and on the outside.
