Iraola adamant Liverpool goals conceded aren’t down to personnel

Liverpool left St James’ Park with a point, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai, but nobody should pretend this was a polished opening-day performance. It was dramatic, it was frantic and it underlined both the strengths and flaws of Andoni Iraola’s side in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle.
There was character, certainly. There was pressure, plenty of it. There was also sloppiness in key moments, especially in transition, and that remains the obvious concern after a game in which Liverpool spent long spells on top yet still needed a 99th-minute spot-kick to avoid defeat.
Iraola’s verdict was direct enough. “I think because you score at the end you probably have a better taste. Before the game, we wouldn’t have signed this result probably.” That sums it up. Liverpool did enough to feel mildly frustrated, but not enough to complain too loudly.

Liverpool pressure finally brings reward
Newcastle struck early through Anthony Elanga and immediately gave Liverpool the sort of problem they had expected all week, pace in open space. The visitors responded after the break through Cody Gakpo, then fell behind again when Joe Willock restored the home side’s lead. At that point, Liverpool were staring at an opening-weekend defeat.
Instead, they kept going. That matters. Iraola said, “I think we’ve never given up, I think we’ve put a lot of pressure against Newcastle and we had to wait until the end. But I think we’ve done more than enough to score that goal.” He is right on the basic point. Liverpool drove the game for long periods and forced Newcastle deeper as the second half wore on.
What changed after the interval was not simply energy, but decisiveness. Iraola admitted, “I think [in] the first half we haven’t finished the things – we’ve had a lot of balls on the edge of the box, inside the box, where we haven’t finished the play, we haven’t shot.” That was accurate. Liverpool got into enough useful areas before the break and too often refused the first obvious option.
After half-time, the play had more conviction. Iraola said, “I think [in the] second half we’ve been more decisive.” Again, correct. Gakpo’s equaliser reflected that sharper edge, and Liverpool built pressure through set-plays, crosses and repeated entries into the box.
Still, one point is one point. Iraola called it “a reward” and added, “It’s not a lot, one point, but at least it’s something that is deserved.” Fair enough. Liverpool earned the draw. They also made life harder than it needed to be.
Dominik Szoboszlai penalty settles late drama
When the penalty arrived deep into stoppage time, there was no shortage of candidates. Szoboszlai took responsibility and buried it. Iraola was in no mood to dress it up. “I think Dom showed the level. It’s an almost impossible penalty to stop.” That was the key moment, and Szoboszlai delivered it with authority.
The Liverpool head coach also made the point that there are plenty of options from 12 yards. “I think we have not only Dom and Alexander [Isak] – we have more very good specialists. Alexis [Mac Allister] also was on the pitch and he’s a very good penalty-taker, Cody – we have a lot.” It is a useful detail because this side has enough technical quality to share responsibility in those moments.
There was also a mention for Victor Munoz, whose impact from the bench helped force the issue. Iraola said, “I’m happy also for Victor because he has created problems to his opposition and I think these players from the bench that can alter games are going to be important for us.” That may prove significant over the season. Liverpool have enough attacking depth to change the tempo of games late on, and they needed it here.
For balance, Iraola also felt his side could have had an even clearer penalty before the one that was given. His view was plain, “I think it was even more clear than the second one.” Managers say these things after games. Sometimes they have a point.
Newcastle transitions punish Liverpool mistakes
This was the real issue. Liverpool knew Newcastle would attack quickly. They prepared for it. They still conceded twice from transition moments. That is not bad luck, it is a tactical and defensive problem that has to be cleaned up.
Iraola was honest enough about the first goal. “I think we should just finish the play. I think we created a great chance. I think it’s a four-v-three, we are on the edge of the box and it’s a clear situation to shoot. We decide not to shoot, we don’t finish it properly and then you have to give credit to Elanga, who wins the race.” This is modern football in one sequence. Waste an attacking situation, lose structure, get punished.
The second goal irritated him more. “Second one, I think we had the numbers to defend it better. It’s not like they caught us by surprise.” That is the important part. Liverpool were not overloaded, they were under-executed. Iraola added, “We should compete for the first ball, probably even make a foul, be a little bit more aggressive against the ball carrier because we had numbers to defend it.” Again, blunt and accurate.
He also made the wider point that Newcastle are elite in these moments. “You don’t want to concede transitions. We have been preparing during the week for transitions, but this is football and there is a reason why Newcastle are so good there.” True, but Liverpool will not want that sentence becoming a regular theme.
Alexander Isak return and early ratings
There was obvious focus on Alexander Isak against his former club. He did not dominate the game, but he contributed and kept working. Iraola said, “I think he has tried everything, has given us good positions on the ball.” He also acknowledged that the striker had chances that were not quite ideal, adding, “[He] probably has had a couple of situations ...
