See the full story · 1 sourcesIn January, Liverpool agreed a £2.6M deal to sign Austrian centre half Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Wien, with the deal finalized this summer when the rising star youngster turned 18 and he became eligible for international transfer. He made his first appearance for the Reds in their pre-season win over Sunderland on Saturday.
However, he is now expected to be loaned to a club in Europe this season—and perhaps most likely will return to Austria Wien for the 2026-27 campaign—after failing to secure a work visa due to the fact that outside of one first team appearance in the Austrian league he has so far only played at the youth levels for both club and country.
In the past, when the United Kingdom was part of the European Union, the Austrian would have qualified to play without having to clear such regulatory hurdles, but the same rules now apply to European players as those from elsewhere in the world and that makes it far harder for promising young players to qualify for a visa.
The threshold for whether or not a foreign player qualifies relies on an endorsement from the FA, with the system at least theoretically meant to ensure that academy space isn’t dominated by imported players who aren’t at a level significantly higher than local talent and who as such would block the development of English players.
Given level and talent are hardly objective measures—though the fact the Reds paid £2.6M to sign him does count as a point in his favour—the system relies heavily on things like senior first team and international appearances, both of which a year on loan could help Ndukwe to earn so that he can qualify next summer.
