Liverpool’s long-running interest in Matteo Ruggeri has run into a familiar problem, Atletico Madrid do not want to sell. According to TuttoMercato , every approach for the left-sided player has been knocked back, including enquiries from Liverpool and Tottenham.

From a Liverpool fan’s point of view, this report is intriguing because Ruggeri sounds like the type of player the club would keep on a serious shortlist. He is young, already has strong experience, and there is clearly a reason multiple clubs in Italy and England have been asking the same questions. When several good teams circle one player, it usually tells you something.
The frustrating part is obvious. Liverpool have been linked for a while, and if the interest really does go back a couple of years, then this is a player the recruitment team clearly respects. That does not mean he is the top target, but it does suggest proper due diligence rather than lazy market opportunism.
What stands out here is Atletico’s firmness. If Simeone wants him, the discussion ends quickly. Liverpool have walked away from plenty of situations like that before, especially when a selling club is not under pressure. There is little point wasting time on a transfer that is going nowhere.
For supporters, the bigger question is whether this means Liverpool are actively searching for a left-sided defensive option right now, or whether Ruggeri is simply one name among many. Under a new head coach, squad shaping matters. If Ruggeri is admired but unavailable, fine, move on decisively. The smart clubs do not get stuck. They identify the profile and find the next one.
