The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2026 preseason with their Hall of Fame Game clash on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC, and Week 1 of the preseason officially kicks off the following week on Aug. 13.
As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.
This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’ve arrived at the Jacksonville Jaguars .
After losing former 1,000-yard rusher Travis Etienne to the New Orleans Saints in free agency, the Jaguars’ RB1 job is up for grabs. Second-year running back Bhayshul Tuten is the presumed favorite to win the job, but how will the rest of the depth chart shake out?
Chris Rodriguez Jr., Ameer Abdullah, LeQuint Allen Jr., DeeJay Dallas, and J’Mari Taylor are expected to battle it out, but at 33, Abdullah is the clear outlier in that group. Not only is he the oldest, but he’s had a spotty NFL career.
Abdullah hasn’t had more than 66 carries in any season since 2017, and the most yards he’s rushed for in that time is 311 with the Raiders two years ago. He may not have what it takes to hold off some of the younger, faster RBs the Jags currently have.
Just like with running back, Jacksonville also has a bit of a logjam at tight end as well. Brenton Strange was the team’s leading TE last year, totaling 46 receptions, 540 yards, and here touchdowns.
But behind him is a hodge-podge group of players all hoping to stand out in camp. Nate Boerkircher seems like a lock for the 53-man roster given the Jags invested a second-round pick in him back in April, and with Ethan Conner, Patrick Herbert, Tanner Koziol, and Quintin Morris all vying for reps, it might be difficult for Hunter Long to set himself apart. The former third-round pick has recorded just 20 catches and 153 yards in his NFL career, and it can be argued he’s not more valuable than a younger, cheaper TE currently on the roster.
Jacksonville has nine defensive ends on its roster right now, and Matt Dickerson is the oldest and most vulnerable heading into camp. Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker are the starters, but who will earn reps behind them?
Dickerson has had a decent career up until this point, but he hasn’t recorded a single sack in his six years, and it might be time to give younger players like Wesley Williams, Bryan Thomas Jr. (not the WR), B.J. Green II, Zach Durfee, or Quindarius Dunnigan a shot to see what they can do.
