Where Clemson lands in college football’s Top 25 most valuable programs
If every Power 4 football program suddenly hit the open market, Clemson would still command a hefty price, but not quite enough to crack the top 20.
The Athletic recently updated its annual estimates for what each Power 4 football program could theoretically sell for , placing the Tigers at No. 25 nationally with an estimated value of $674 million. While that’s an increase from last year’s $655 million projection, Clemson slipped three spots in the overall rankings because other programs made bigger gains.
The Tigers no longer trail only one ACC school in the rankings. Miami now sits atop the conference at No. 18 with a projected value of $950 million after making a significant jump from last year. Florida State follows at No. 20 with an estimated worth of $819 million, leaving Clemson third among ACC members.
Matt Baker explained why he believes Clemson faces more challenges than some of the schools around it in the rankings.
“The Tigers are in a similar spot to Florida State, but their situation is more precarious because Clemson doesn’t have the geographic advantages of being in Florida or a history quite as rich as FSU’s,” Baker wrote. “The trend doesn’t look great for Clemson — regardless of what Dabo Swinney says — which puts the Tigers behind this group of mid-Power 2 programs. This valuation is in the Chicago Fire FC/New York Red Bulls range in the middle of the MLS, according to Sportico.”
The estimates are not intended to reflect actual market value. Instead, The Athletic built a model using each school’s reported football revenue, then adjusted for factors including conference affiliation, fan support, location, brand strength and the changing landscape of college athletics. The publication also compared college programs to professional sports franchises when determining potential sale prices.
Texas led the rankings at an estimated $2.46 billion, followed by Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan, with each clearing the $2 billion mark. Clemson’s Week 1 opponent, LSU, narrowly missed the top 10, checking in at No. 11 with a valuation of $1.32 billion. South Carolina was listed at No. 29 with an estimated value of $597 million.

The Tigers received an ACC-leading $55.1 million in conference distributions during the latest fiscal year after returning to the College Football Playoff, a figure that increased by roughly $10 million from the previous year.
The updated rankings also reflect the widening financial gap across college football. Five SEC programs and four Big Ten schools occupied the top 10, highlighting the growing influence of the sport’s two richest conferences.
