19 residents were displaced and 18 people were rescued after a two-alarm apartment fire tore through San Francisco’s Western Addition early Thursday morning, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at about 1:56 a.m. in the 800 block of Fillmore Street. The San Francisco Fire Department initially placed the fire’s location in the 900 block.
Firefighters found heavy fire in a three-story, multi-unit residential building over commercial space with multiple occupants in need of rescue. The blaze quickly escalated to a two-alarm response.
Crews rescued 18 people from second- and third-floor windows using ground and aerial ladders, while several other residents were rescued from inside the building, according to the department. One civilian was injured and is expected to recover.
The fire spread to two structures — 865 Fillmore St. and 855 Fillmore St. — but firefighters prevented it from extending to surrounding buildings. The fire was contained at 3:25 a.m. and declared under control at 3:33 a.m.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency provided a bus to serve as a temporary shelter for displaced residents while the San Francisco Human Services Agency and the American Red Cross provided emergency assistance and shelter information.
Firefighters remained at the scene Thursday morning extinguishing hot spots and investigating the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.
Authorities urged the public to continue avoiding the area around Fillmore and Fulton streets, as well as nearby Grove Street, while crews cleared the scene.
