The largest lottery jackpot ever won, $2.04 billion, was in California in 2022.
Last year, the Powerball jackpot reached $1.817 billion and was won by a single ticket in Arkansas.
Winning tickets have ranged from hundreds of thousands of dollars to hundreds of millions.
Lottery jackpots continue to climb to staggering heights, with the Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing now sitting at an estimated $707 million.
Although billion-dollar prizes remain rare, they've become far more common over the past decade.
The Christmas Eve Powerball jackpot of $1.817 billion was the second-largest lottery prize in US history, while the biggest lottery prize in US history remains the $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won in California in November 2022.
Factors such as rising interest rates, updated game rules (including lower odds), and higher-priced tickets have contributed to the recent surge in billion-dollar jackpots .
Jackpocket compiled a list of the biggest prizes won on a single lottery ticket in each state, with prizes ranging from the low millions to billion-dollar jackpots.
Some states, such as Alabama, Alaska, and Hawaii, do not have state lotteries and were therefore not included in the list.
Here's the biggest lottery win in every state.
ARIZONA: $410 million

The couple who won the grand prize were from Glendale but chose to remain anonymous, a local NBC News station reported at the time, in June 2020.
The winning lottery ticket was also the first Mega Millions winning ticket in the state's history, KTAR News reported.
ARKANSAS: $1.817 billion

The Powerball jackpot drawn on Christmas Eve 2025 was the second-biggest in history. One ticket sold at a gas station in Cabot, northeast of Little Rock, matched all six numbers. The winner claimed the prize in January 2026, opting for the $834.9 million lump-sum option.
The prize dwarfs the previous largest win in the state. In 2017, a Mega Millions ticket sold in Stuttgart, Arkansas, was worth $177 million, or a cash value of about $107 million before taxes.
CALIFORNIA: $2.04 billion

A Powerball winner in California claimed the largest lottery win in US history in November 2022. The winning ticket was sold at Joe's Service Center in Altadena, about 15 miles outside downtown Los Angeles, NBC News reported at the time.
The winner was identified as Edwin Castro, who opted for a lump sum of $997.6 million, USA Today reported. Castro, who was reportedly living in a one-bedroom home at the time of his win, went on to buy two multimillion-dollar properties shortly after collecting his prize.
NBC News also reported that the owner of the gas station and convenience store, Joseph Chahayed (pictured with his sons), was presented with a $1 million check for selling the ticket.
COLORADO: $133 million

The ticket was purchased by 67-year-old Judy Finchum in September 2017. ABC News reported he had been playing the exact same lottery numbers for 30 years until she finally won the $133.2 million Powerball jackpot on her dog Tillie's birthday.
CONNECTICUT: $254.2 million

The winners of the Powerball jackpot, three businessmen from Greenwich — one of America's wealthiest towns — came forward 27 days after it was announced, NBC Connecticut reported in November 2011.
DELAWARE: $230.8 million

A Powerball ticket sold in Middletown won the $230.8 million prize in a drawing on April 6, 2026, the first time the Powerball jackpot has been won in Delaware since 2016, according to the lottery . Winners in the state can stay anonymous.
The win surpassed the previous record of $214.7 million prize claimed by 33 Seaford coworkers in 2004.
FLORIDA: $800 million

A single Mega Millions ticket sold at a Wawa in Bradenton won the $800 million jackpot in a drawing on July 28, 2026, but the winner has not yet been publicly identified. The prize has a cash option of $344.2 million, which they'd have to claim in 60 days.
Previously, the record was held by Gloria C. MacKenzie, 84, who became the then-largest sole lottery winner in US history when she won the Powerball in May 2013. She died in 2021.
GEORGIA: $318 million

Ira Curry of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was identified as the winner of the Mega Millions jackpot in December 2013, WSB-TV reported.
"It's unreal," Curry said during a news conference. "It's like I'm still dreaming."
IDAHO: $220.3 million

NPR reported in 2013 that Brad Duke from Star, Idaho, became the winner of the state's largest lottery jackpot in May 2005 when he won a staggering $220.3 million in the Powerball drawing.
"I took the ticket in, let the gals behind the counter run the ticket through, and the machine made a bunch of weird noises and they started jumping up and down and jumping in circles," Duke told NPR. "And I was trying to actually pluck the ticket out of their hand because my first instinct was just to kind of get out of there."
ILLINOIS: $1.337 billion
