Extra Point Preview: Rams look to charge towards instant success under first-year head coach
HEADLAND, Ala. ( WDHN )—After back-to-back years of searching for a head coach, the Headland Rams simply want a sense of consistency throughout the program.
Luckily for them, they might have found that after the team hired Ashley Trammell, a local favorite in Headland who has been heavily involved in Rams athletics for years, and he says this opportunity is a dream come true.
"It's been a lifelong dream of mine to be a head coach, and it's taken me a while to get here, but I'm finally here," Trammell said. "It was like a weight off my shoulders to finally get the job, but it's been exciting so far."
Trammell takes over a Ram program coming off a 4-5 finish last season, and he's coming in this year looking to instill his old-school, hard-nosed culture in this Headland team.
The Rams' head coach said he's building a defense to complement the team's lack of size, highlighting its speed and athleticism and emphasizing stopping the run.
Offensively, Trammell said that he is going to throw everything and the kitchen sink at opponents.
"Offensively, we're going to be multiple; I like to go from spread to old-school formations and get to the same plays. I'm an old defensive coordinator, and even though I'm calling the offense, when I started calling the offense, I looked at it as a defensive coordinator. And what do I not like the most, a team that's going to formation you to death."
Headland's offense will be led by junior quarterback Casey Knowles, who has been a part-time starter for the past two seasons.
Donald Spruill will be the team's feature running back this season, while Kingston Williams, Colton Davis, and Jordan Kinsey are set to lead the wide receiving core.
A long-time resident of Headland and fan of the Rams, Trammell knows how much a successful season would mean to this fan base.
But he said he's not worried about any pressure to perform in year one; he just wants to show his community that he's here to stay.
"Now that I'm here, I have to live up to the expectations. But I don't think it adds any pressure...consistency is something the community wants, and I've proven that I'm going to be around and I'm going to be here."
