“The goal was always to win a world series for the city, for the organization that took a chance on me,” Skubal said. “It’s tough. I love all those guys in there. They’re some of my best friends. It’ll be tough for sure.”
Skubal also spoke about his eagerness to join the Dodgers, though had to hold back some tears before his answer.
“It’s exciting, I’m excited,” he said. “They got a good group, you head everything across the way. I’m excited though.”

Skubal’s emotion is understandable, as he has been in the Tigers’ organization since they drafted him in 2018. The southpaw has pitched in the majors since 2020, becoming one of the best pitchers in the game over the past few seasons.
He won his first Cy Young award in 2024, when he posted a 2.39 ERA with 228 strikeouts, and got even better the following year, posting a 2.21 ERA with 241 strikeouts, as he won his second. Skubal missed some time this season following a stint on the injured list with loose bodies in his elbow, but is still performing at a pretty high level.
Through 16 starts, Skubal has a 2.79 ERA and has 116 strikeouts through 96.2 innings pitched. He’s sure to immediately slot into the rotation as the Dodgers try to cover for the injured Shohei Ohtani.

Who Did the Dodgers Trade for Tarik Skubal?
In exchange for Skubal, the Dodgers sent three highly talented prospects to Detroit. 27-year-old River Ryan is likely to head to the show soon with the Tigers after being blocked for so long in the Dodgers’ organization. He has been with Triple-A Oklahoma City all season, posting a 4.46 ERA through eight starts.
Zyhir Hope is the highest-ranked prospect of the group, and has proven why through 94 games in Double-A this season. He has a .899 OPS this year, hitting 23 homers and driving in 87 RBIs, both of which already mark career highs.
Brady Smith is the final piece in the package, and he has made 21 starts on the year in Class-A and High-A. He has a 4.36 ERA, striking out 113 batters in just 74.1 innings pitched. His incredible K rate makes him an interesting prospect for the future.
While the Dodgers parted with three highly regarded prospects in this trade, acquiring Skubal made them runaway favorites for a three-peat, the first in franchise and National League history. They’ll hope the left-hander can give them the boost they need to walk to a third consecutive championship.
