Did the Las Vegas Raiders hit the jackpot with Fernando Mendoza?
\n That question won't be answered for a long time, but in the immediate, they'll at least get a piece of the picture when the No. 1 overall pick takes the field on Thursday night vs. the Arizona Cardinals .
\n Mendoza won't get a chance to start, at least immediately, this season. Instead, that privilege belongs to veteran passer Kirk Cousins, who will get the keys to the new-look Raiders offense, designed by incoming head coach Klint Kubiak.
\n Kubiak is fresh off a Super Bowl victory with the Seattle Seahawks and now has an opportunity to usher in a new and more successful era of Raiders football after securing the Heisman Trophy winner in the 2026 NFL Draft.
\n The Cardinals are hoping they have a passer of the future, too, in Carson Beck. The University of Miami (Fla.) product got his first taste of NFL action in the Hall of Fame game , and the passer performed well: Beck finished the matchup 15 of 19 for 188 yards and a touchdown.
\n Coincidentally, Beck and Mendoza met in the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship game, with Mendoza and the Hoosiers taking home college football's ultimate prize in the matchup.
\n Unfortunately for viewers, they won't meet again tonight, as the Cardinals passer was ruled out with an injury.
