MONTVILLE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A search for two missing seniors in Montville, New Jersey came to an end on Tuesday after one was found dead, and the other found alive.
The search for 77-year-old John Higgins and 87-year-old Virginia Taetzch began on Monday around 10:15 p.m., after police located an unattended vehicle in the parking lot of Pyramid Mountain.
An investigation determined that Higgins and Taetzch went for a hike in Pyramid Mountain on Sunday around 1 p.m.
A more comprehensive search of the area began on Tuesday. Authorities say that Higgins was located alive by officers, and was taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital.
The search continued for Taetzch, who was located by officers and pronounced dead at the scene.
"Our multi-agency Search and Rescue operation successfully saved one life, while sadly recovering a deceased individual. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families during this difficult time, and we thank all agencies involved for their dedicated efforts," said Morris County Sheriff James Gannon.
