Steelers RB Jaylen Warren gets bad news at training camp

Training camp has given fans a glimpse at which Pittsburgh Steelers are pulling ahead in specific positional battles, and things don't look great for running back Jaylen Warren .

According to a new report from Mark Kaboly, running back Rico Dowdle, who signed with the Steelers via free agency this past March, has been emerging as the RB1 over Jaylen Warren in training camp.

“Just guessing, just how [the Steelers] employ them on the field, rep-wise, so far, it looks like [Dowdle is] going to be the main guy,” Kaboly said via 93.7 The Fan. “Main guy doesn't mean 90 percent of the snaps. Maybe more so 65-70. That's the way I look at it right now. A lot of talk about how violent of a runner he is. He's quicker than I thought he was. Jaylen Warren is a really good player. They'll both be out there, but I think [Dowdle] will definitely be [the guy].”

Warren, who signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft, has been a solid dual-threat option out of the backfield for Pittsburgh, recording 3,859 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns over the past four seasons.

Dowdle, who previously played for new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy on the Dallas Cowboys, is on the verge of history in 2026: potentially becoming the first running back to record three consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with three different teams.

If Dowdle does emerge as the “main guy” in Pittsburgh's running back room, Warren should still see plenty of usage as a receiving threat out of the backfield, with both playmakers forming one of the league's most fearsome rushing attack duos.
