Cleaning staffer dies days after caught in crossfire of Little Village shooting

An autopsy is scheduled Thursday for a cleaning employee on his way home from work who died days after he was shot early Saturday in the Little Village neighborhood.

Armando Viveros Cortes, 35, was among a group of four employees in a vehicle returning home from work around 2:40 a.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of South Central Park Avenue when gunfire rang out and Viveros Cortes was struck in the head, Chicago police said.

Viveros Cortes' co-workers, who initially thought the blasts were fireworks, then drove to the Ogden District police station and honked their horn until officers came outside to assist, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.

The victim, who was a backseat passenger, was then taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday, police said.

At least 27 shell casings and seven nine-millimeter casings were found at the scene, according to the police report.

Area 4 detectives were investigating.
