LIV Golf reportedly set to announce cancellation of team finale in Michigan

LIV Golf’s team finale has reportedly been canceled.

The report by Flushing It comes a couple weeks after Cleeks captain Martin Kaymer told Today’s Golfer that LIV’s team championship, scheduled for Aug. 27-30 at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Plymouth, Michigan, was “highly unlikely” to take place.

Flushing It , which previously cited several contractors whose travel arrangements for the event had been canceled, said that an official announcement was expected from LIV on Wednesday.

LIV Michigan was supposed to offer a $40 million purse, down from $50 million last year, with $11.2 million going to the winning team. But PIF’s funding, originally announced to run through this year, has begun to dry up earlier than anticipated, according to Front Office Sports , which quoted one LIV source as saying last month, “I don’t think they’ll ever get to Michigan.”

The Detroit News reported last week that no infrastructure had been built at The Cardinal, another ominous sign for LIV Michigan, which would become the second LIV tournament to be scrapped this year.

The June 25-28 LIV New Orleans event was originally postponed in April, though it’s since become clear that a targeted fall rescheduling won’t happen either. A spokesperson for Louisiana Economic Development told Front Office Sports that the state is still waiting on LIV to refund the $1.2 million it paid as part of the $5 million hosting fee.

Last week’s LIV U.K. tournament in Straffordshire, England, won by Lucas Herbert, marked the league’s first competitive action in 47 days. During the event, LIV held a captains’ meeting, where CEO Scott O’Neil assured players that there was interest from potential investors, though according to Kaymer, he provided few specifics in the wake of the Asian Tour’s announced partnership with the PGA and DP World tours.

“Unfortunately, even Scott, he can’t tell us because he doesn’t know,” Kaymer said.

Front Office Sports reported that O’Neil and LIV are operating under a Sept. 1 deadline to secure funding for next year.

Over a half-dozen LIV players reportedly told Flushing It they do not plan on resigning with LIV after this season, regardless of whether the league continues in 2027.

“I have to look after myself and my career,” one of those players told Flushing It . “Every year I play on LIV is another suspension. I can play the next few events and make as much money as I can and then play in Asia and get DP invites. I could be on the PGA Tour in two years if I play well.”

In England, Jon Rahm was asked directly if he expected to be competing on LIV next year, to which he gave a non-answer: “I'm not going to share anything that I can't share with you guys right now.”

Without Michigan, LIV has two more events remaining on this year’s competitive calendar: Aug. 6-9 at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey and Aug. 20-23 at The Club at Chatham Hills in Indianapolis.
