Seahawks make roster decision following season-ending injury

The Seattle Seahawks have lost a valuable piece of their wide receiver room just weeks before the NFL regular season.

Jake Bobo has been placed on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a significant knee injury during Friday’s joint practice with the Tennessee Titans, forcing Seattle to make an immediate roster move.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said Friday that the early indications pointed toward a long-term injury, and further testing confirmed the worst-case scenario.

The loss is particularly frustrating because Bobo had earned his place on Seattle’s roster over the past three seasons. The 28-year-old has appeared in 45 regular-season games since entering the NFL in 2023, recording 34 receptions for 323 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed during Seattle’s Super Bowl run last season, catching two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown during the playoffs.

Bobo’s value went beyond his receiving numbers, too. He played an important role on special teams and was considered a strong blocker, making his absence another challenge for Seattle’s roster construction heading into the season.

Julian Hicks gets another opportunity

Seattle had previously brought Hicks aboard earlier this month before waiving him to make room for cornerback Trevon Diggs.

Hicks, who went undrafted out of Albany in 2024, has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game. He did spend time with the Green Bay Packers before returning to Seattle. He has also spent time in the UFL.

Bobo’s injury also creates an opportunity for other receivers to earn additional playing time. Seattle already has Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed and Cooper Kupp at the top of the depth chart, but the competition behind them has suddenly become much more important.

For a Seahawks team looking to defend its Super Bowl title, losing Bobo this early is a significant blow. Seattle now has to replace his contributions on offense, special teams, and in the locker room while turning to younger players and Hicks for additional depth.
