Jets finally have veteran leadership at every level of the defense

The New York Jets didn't just add talent this offseason. They added leadership.

After fielding one of the NFL's least productive defenses in 2025, general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn prioritized proven veterans who have succeeded at the highest level .

The result is a defense with experienced leadership on every level, giving New York a foundation it simply didn't have a year ago. Now the challenge is turning that experience into wins .

Building a defense starts in the trenches. The Jets strengthened their front by adding veteran defensive tackle David Onyemata, whose experience should help stabilize a young defensive line that includes promising players like Jowon Briggs and first-round pick David Bailey.

While Bailey brings explosiveness off the edge, Onyemata provides a steady presence capable of helping younger teammates adjust to the NFL. Joseph Ossai and Kingsley Enagbare are two of the other new faces who can help Bailey further acclimate himself to the pro game. That combination of youth and experience is exactly what Glenn hoped to create .

Few players understand NFL defense better than linebacker Demario Davis. The veteran linebacker arrives with more than a decade of experience, bringing leadership and football intelligence to a position group already anchored by Jamien Sherwood, who has recorded more than 250 tackles over the past two seasons.

Sherwood remains one of the defense's rising stars, but Davis gives the Jets another coach on the field—someone capable of getting teammates lined up and helping accelerate the development of younger defenders.

No addition may prove more significant than Minkah Fitzpatrick. The five-time Pro Bowler immediately becomes the leader of a secondary replacing Sauce Gardner while integrating several new cornerbacks.

Veteran leadership should accelerate the rebuild

The Jets aren't asking their veterans to carry the defense. They're asking them to raise the standard. Young players like Bailey, Azareye'h Thomas, D'Angelo Ponds and Briggs now have accomplished veterans to learn from every day during practice.

That mentorship could prove just as valuable as anything the coaching staff teaches throughout training camp. Experience alone doesn't guarantee success, but it often helps teams avoid the mistakes that plagued New York a season ago.

The Jets still have to prove they can pressure quarterbacks, create takeaways and consistently finish games. But unlike last season, Glenn's defense now features experienced leadership on the defensive line, at linebacker and in the secondary. If those veterans help accelerate the development of the Jets' young talent, New York's defense could improve much faster than last year's record might suggest.
