Add Page Six on Google Sandra Bullock revealed that her kids handled her late parter Bryan Randall's ALS diagnosis "very differently" from one another.
The "Practical Magic 2" star shared that her kids, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, were “completely aware” of Randall's condition but had set up boundaries for when it became too difficult to handle.
"About two years before Bryan passed, [Louis] saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around," she shared on a recent episode of the "SmartLess" podcast .
Speaking about her son, Bullock shared, “So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time.”
The actress admitted that she "felt the guilt," explaining that Louis "chose to just be there, and support and help [her] on the things that were easy for [her]."
"But, he smartly disengaged himself and said, this is a safer space for me to sit," she explained. "And I said, 'Absolutely you go.'”
As for Laila, she was "more bonded until about six months out," Bullock said.
“And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely,'" the "Miss Congeniality" star said.
"And I said, ‘But, if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’”
Bullock shared that her kids were "completely aware" of Randall's condition because he was "bedridden" and he was staying at her house with several nurses also onsite.
“They could see," she said. "They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids. Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us.”
The "Proposal" star shared that she had Randall's quarters in a separate part of her home from her children.
“I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it," she added elsewhere, saying how she also saw a child psychologist to help her kids navigate.
Three years after his diagnosis, Randall passed away from the neurodegenerative disease at the age of 57 on Aug. 5, 2023.
The model's illness wasn't publicly disclosed until after his death, with Bullock also sharing on the podcast, "He asked me not to share."
While Bullock understood Randall's request, she explained it “isolated [her] in the process" because the only person who knew was her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado.
Eventually, she confided in her longtime friend Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, who is the wife of “SmartLess” co-host Jason Bateman.
“I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock explained.
“There was something that had shifted," she added. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
According to the ALS Association , it's a "progressive disease in which a person’s brain loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away their ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe." There is also no cure.
Bullock and Randall first crossed paths in January 2015 when he worked as the photographer at Louis’ birthday party. They made their relationship romantic soon after and went public with their romance at the premiere of her movie “Our Brand Is Crisis" that October.
She previously gushed over Randall as "the love of [her] life" and "the best thing ever" on “Red Table Talk” in December 2021.
Randall helped raise Bullock’s children, whom she adopted. As for Randall, he shared 32-year-old daughter, Skylar, with his ex Janine Staten.
