6 Unforgettable Moments From My First 'Final Fantasy XIV' Fan Fest

Held July 25-26 in Berlin , the event was a celebration of Square Enix 's mega popular MMO, which has 15 million registered players.

Not only did it herald the arrival of several game-changing additions set to arrive over the next few months, it also gave fans the chance to enter cosplay competitions, grab rare merch, and attend one of the wildest end concerts ever.

There was just one problem: I had never once played "Final Fantasy XIV."

As it turns out, that didn't matter. The infectious energy of the 10,000 in attendance told me all I needed to know.

"Final Fantasy XIV" producer and director Naoki Yoshida opened Fan Festival 2026 with a marathon keynote presentation spread over almost three hours. “We'll make the next one a bit shorter” he joked later in a media-only press conference.

Not that anyone at the packed hub27 in Messe Berlin seemed to mind. Ever the showman, 53-year-old Yoshida wore a full set of fantasy armor throughout and barely broke a sweat.

While the procession of teasers and trailers were pretty much lost on me (I have no idea why people cheered for a big white building but I'm happy for them), it was fascinating to see delirious fan reactions from an outsider's perspective.

With plenty to see and do, it's hard to pick just six standout moments from my two-day experience.

Having never been to a Fan Fest, the show floor was a fever dream. There were tattoo parlors, dance floors, target practice, pachinko, fairground fishing, and carnival knockdown games . Visually, it was like walking through some bizarre multiverse.

A Wild West zone was nestled next to a ‘70s inspired disco presided over by a giant green rabbit wearing shades. Ancient Greek columns were flanked by giant Japanese cherry blossoms.

For fans, it must have been thrilling to physically occupy locations they've spent so much virtual time in. Personally, I just loved the randomness of it all.

The trailer for "Final Fantasy XIV"'s first expansion in three years was the talk of Fan Fest 2026. It had everything: new realms, elemental dangers, and a skyscraper-sized lump of evil coal.

The game's sixth expansion takes players to a new realm populated by great airships built to escape encroaching ice. On these Realmships players will take on new quests, face new threats, and earn powerful new rewards.

Planned for release in Jan. 2027, that's just enough time for me to start up a new character.

The first of two scheduled musical performances at Fan Fest 2026 was, in a word, beautiful. Performed by Keiko, fans were treated to a live symphony of tracks from the game. I Shazamed almost all of them.

My favorite was the somber "What Angel Wakes Me." The sight of thousands of light-up colored batons waving across the auditorium is unforgettable. When it was over I immediately looked it up on Spotify.

Music, I discovered, is crucial to the game. Each new expansion comes with an album's worth of new tracks. There was even a dedicated panel where the game's music artists and sound designers offered fresh insights.

"Evercold" adds two new Jobs to the game, which elicited whoops from all corners of the hall when revealed. I'll be honest, I had no idea what a ‘Job’ meant in this context until someone next to me explained that it was simply a character class.

The two Jobs accompanying "Evercold" are a ranged DPS, and a burly tank who strikes foes with twin shields.

“It’s said that no Raider’s axe can penetrate a Bastion’s hulking Skyltborg-and one would be foolish to try,” writes Square Enix in its official desxeiption, “for these shape-changing greatshields’ aetherial artillery has brought a swift end to many a marauder, be it from near of far.”

"Final Fantasy XIV" Fan Fest 2026 ended with a showstopping performance from rock band The Primals, who played a raucous set consisting of songs from the game. It was wild to see the keynote's polite translator Koji Fox don a fedora and transform into his role as the band's brash front man.

It was impossible to predict what the next song would sound like. Best described as The Hives meets Spinal Tap, there was a rap/rock track that gave final boss energy, a funky disco flavored singalong, and for some reason, a stage invasion by people in satin shirts and frog masks (I later learned this was a homage to the game's froggy minion).

Fan Fest worked its magic. When my FOMO hit its peak, I checked out how much it would cost to join up. That's when I found out the base game, along with hundreds of hours of content, is completely free to download.

Sure, there are subscriptions to access later content, as well as premium vanity items, but being able to give it a go without an up-front cost is all I needed to hear.
