Flooding leaves cars stranded across New Jersey after heavy rain By Eyewitness News Friday, August 28, 2026 2:31PM Jaysha Patel reports from Elizabeth, New Jersey. ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) -- Heavy rain brought flooding to parts of New Jersey Thursday, covering roadways, stranding vehicles and making it difficult for some residents to leave their homes.
Video from Bond and East 6th streets in Elizabeth showed significant flooding as water filled the roadway.
Similar scenes played out in several areas across the state. While some drivers were able to make it through the floodwaters, others became stranded and some vehicles were abandoned.
The storms also brought thunder and lightning to the region.
In Sayreville, first responders were called to a small fire on Jensen Road during the storms.
Farther south, hail was reported in Pitman as severe weather moved through the state.
In some flooded neighborhoods, residents stepped in to help drivers who found themselves trapped in the rising water.
"I told the guy, 'Hey, if you want, I'll help you push your car,'" one resident said. "But you have to basically hop out the window."
Other residents found themselves unable to leave their homes because of the flooding.
"There was actually one car down there that got stuck in the middle of the street. It's a lot," one resident said.
When asked whether they had been stuck inside their home, the resident responded, "Yeah. Literally. Just stuck in the house."
Officials remind drivers to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown.
