Newcastle preparing offer for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha

Sky Germany reports that Newcastle United have made initial contact with Felix Nmecha’s representatives as they prepare to intensify their pursuit of the Borussia Dortmund midfielder. The German broadcaster claims that the Premier League outfit intends to submit an offer for the 25-year-old following Bruno Guimarães’ move to Arsenal. Newcastle have also generated substantial additional funds through the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

The opening exchange with Nmecha’s camp does not, however, constitute an agreement or confirmation that the German international wishes to leave Dortmund. Sport Bild reports that the midfielder is not currently pushing for a move to St James’ Park. Dortmund remain equally determined to retain him. BVB would reportedly only enter serious negotiations in response to an extraordinary offer between €100m and €120m.

Newcastle revive long-standing Nmecha interest

Newcastle identified Nmecha as their preferred potential Guimarães replacement earlier this week , but their interest in the midfielder predates his arrival in Dortmund.

The Magpies considered signing Nmecha before he left Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023. The Hamburg-born midfielder instead chose Dortmund, who paid approximately €30m as part of their attempt to rebuild following Jude Bellingham’s transfer to Real Madrid.

Nmecha’s first season at the Westfalenstadion did not proceed as planned. Repeated injury setbacks prevented him from establishing rhythm or consistently demonstrating why Dortmund had committed such a significant fee.

His status changed considerably following Niko Kovac’s appointment. Nmecha developed into one of the most important components of the Croatian coach’s midfield, providing physical power, press resistance and the capacity to immediately turn regained possession into counterattacking opportunities.

His versatility enabled him to work as a six, an eight or in a more advanced role, though his forward carrying and technical quality rendered him particularly effective when allowed to operate higher up the pitch.

Nmecha also developed a promising understanding with his fellow English youth international Jobe Bellingham during the Club World Cup and subsequent summer preparations. Partially raised in England, both Felix and his brother Lukas speak fluent English.

Nmecha’s Dortmund value has risen dramatically

Inter Milan and Manchester United expressed interest last summer , when Dortmund were reportedly seeking approximately €60m. That valuation already represented twice the amount BVB had paid Wolfsburg. Nmecha’s importance has increased further since then.

The midfielder became a central figure in Dortmund’s successful campaign, re-established himself with the German national team and emerged as one of the country’s more convincing performers during an otherwise disappointing World Cup.

Dortmund rewarded that development by extending his contract through 2030 in March. The agreement reportedly contains an €80m release clause that becomes active next summer before dropping to €70m in 2028.

Neither clause can be activated during the present transfer window. Newcastle must therefore negotiate directly with Dortmund and offer substantially more than the value of Nmecha’s future exit mechanism.

Dortmund have built their midfield around Nmecha

Selling at €100m or more would generate an enormous profit and provide Dortmund with considerable resources for further squad restructuring. The timing nevertheless makes a deal especially difficult.

Kovac has constructed his midfield around Nmecha’s ability to cover ground, evade pressure and connect defensive recoveries with attacking transitions. Replacing that combination shortly before the Bundesliga season would be considerably more complicated than simply reinvesting the fee.

The player’s current position creates an additional obstacle. Although a Premier League return reportedly remains a possible long-term ambition, Nmecha does not appear intent on forcing a transfer this summer.

Sporting director Nils-Ole Book recently left only the narrowest opening for an exceptional offer .

“I would consider that [a transfer] highly unlikely,” Book said. “Of course, there can theoretically always be astronomical sums, but in Felix’s case, I can pretty safely rule it out this summer.”

Newcastle possess the financial capacity to test that position. Whether they are prepared to reach Dortmund’s €100m-to-€120m threshold—and whether Nmecha can be persuaded to leave—remain far less certain.
