Janice McNair was loved by the city of Houston.
And the city made sure to give the First Lady of the Houston Texans a proper goodbye.
Thousands of Houstonians gathered on Friday morning to pay their respects at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church for McNair's funeral. The matirach of the McNair family died early this month of natural causes at the age of 89.
Among those in attendance from the Texans organization were Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Johnson, three-time Defensive Player of the Year and former Texans great J.J. Watt, current Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, former head coach Gary Kubiak, general manager Nick Caserio and Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Cal McNair, the Texans' CEO and chair, spoke of his mother and father's constant care to give back to the city and provide a permenant home for football back in Houston.
“She was exceptional,” McNair said, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Alongside her husband, Bob, Janice co-founded the Texans by buying the expansion rights in 1999 after Bud Adams moved the Oilers to Tennessee. The Texans made their official debut in September 2002 and will celebrate their 25th anniversary this fall.

— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) July 25, 2026 When Bob died in 2018, Jaince took over as the team's principal owner until relinquishing her power to Cal in 2024. In addition to her role with the Texans, McNair was also a dedicated philanthropist, creating foundations throughout the city and giving more than half a billion dollars in her lifetime toward the groups.
“Alongside Bob, she helped bring the NFL back to her beloved Houston and played an essential role in building the Texans into an organization that reflects the values they held dear — service, integrity, and commitment to community,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement after McNair’s death.
