The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is one of the more fascinating ones to follow this preseason. With Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders in a heated QB competition, there is sure to be plenty of discourse over the winner and loser.
But behind those two polarizing QBs are a pair of very fascinating players for different reasons. Dillon Gabriel was a 2025 third-round pick, while Taylen Green is a project taken on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft. One of these QBs might not make the team.
Bleacher Report's Moe Moton proposed one solution, as he's urging the Browns to release Gabriel this summer, not trade him, in a move that would be totally horrendous.
Browns urged to make horrendous Dillon Gabriel release decision
"Dillon Gabriel is clearly the No. 3 quarterback," Moton writes. "... Teams may be willing to trade a late-round draft pick for him, but if not, he should be a prime cut candidate."
This idea from Moton would be horrible for the Browns for many reasons. But it should be known that the idea of moving on from Gabriel isn't bad. It just would need to be a trade, not a release.
Cutting Gabriel would be a terrible decision, as some team would surely scoop him up and get a young, cheap quarterback for the next three seasons for nothing.
The Browns should absolutely hold out to find a trade for the lefty quarterback. While he's not going to bring back a third-round pick, let alone a fourth-rounder, he could net a fifth if a team is desperate.
MORE : Why Shedeur Sanders vs. Deshaun Watson QB competition is taking so long for Browns
Gabriel threw for 937 passing yards last season with seven touchdowns and two picks. It was an 80.8 passer rating for Gabriel, which isn't great, but it's not horrible either.
He's a game manager who, while maybe holding a lower ceiling than some other QBs, does have a decently high floor. Cutting such a player after just one season would be terrible business for the Browns.
Even if it means holding onto four quarterbacks, the Browns absolutely cannot cut Gabriel. The same goes for Sanders, Watson, and even Green, who might have the highest upside of the bunch.
Trading Gabriel would be an okay outcome, but a release would be such a horrendous decision that it'd be shocking if the Browns were to actually make this roster move.
