Angel Rampersad, the Ozone Park native who was killed earlier this month in an attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan.
The vigil is set to take place in her hometown community as residents continue to mourn the loss of the 28-year-old soldier and celebrate her life, service and sacrifice. Community leaders are encouraging residents to attend and pay tribute to one of Queens' own.
Rampersad was among three American service members killed in the attack. The Army said she is believed to have been killed in action on July 17 during an enemy attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.
Loved ones have remembered Rampersad as a dedicated soldier who was devoted to serving her country. Her mother, Carol Acevedo, described her daughter as "a good soldier" who loved her work and was committed to her mission.
Family members said Rampersad knew from a young age that she wanted to join the military. After graduating from college, she enlisted in the Army in 2019 and served assignments in Hawaii and Germany before reenlisting.
A graduate of John Jay College, Forest Hills High School and P.S. 108, Rampersad moved to the United States from Trinidad with her mother and sister when she was 2 years old.
In the days since her death, neighbors have lined streets with American flags and left porch lights on in tribute to the fallen soldier.
