Liverpool’s pre season tour of the United States has produced several encouraging moments, but few have generated as much excitement as the emergence of Trey Nyoni.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been one of the standout performers during Liverpool’s preparations for the new season, with his performances against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds strengthening the argument that he could have a genuine role in Andoni Iraola’s first team squad.

Speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, David Lynch joined Dave Davis to discuss Liverpool’s young players and highlighted Nyoni as one of the biggest positives from the summer.

Nyoni’s performances have caught the attention of supporters and analysts alike, with Lynch believing the midfielder has done enough to remove any doubts over whether he should remain around the senior squad.

“There’s just no doubt in my mind at this point that he is 100% part of the first team squad going into next season and rightly so,” Lynch told Dave Davis.

Liverpool had a decision to make regarding Nyoni’s next stage of development, with the possibility of a loan move previously considered. Lynch believes the youngster’s displays have now answered that question.

“They had the decision to make over where he takes his step into first team football, is it with us so do we have to send him out on loan and I think he’s made that decision for them.”

For Lynch, Nyoni’s involvement throughout pre season has been significant, with the midfielder showing the qualities required to compete at senior level.

“I think it’s telling that he’s involved straight from the off again. I think he really just is in first team contention now and his performances are just spot on.”

Nyoni’s appeal has not only come from his technical ability, but also his confidence and decision making in possession.

Lynch highlighted the youngster’s ability to play progressive passes, break lines and contribute defensively, qualities that fit the demands of Iraola’s system.

“His use of the ball is brilliant, fizzing it through the lines. Really kind of clever in the way that he does that and brave as well. He’s ambitious in his passing, which the manager seems to like.”

The midfielder’s work without the ball has also impressed, with Lynch noting his involvement in Liverpool’s pressing game during pre season.

“But also as you say the kind of ability to nip in and nick the ball, you know, again, pretty sure he was involved in the pressing moments.”

That all round contribution has helped Nyoni stand out in a midfield group where competition for places is expected to be intense.

Nyoni’s role growing under Iraola

One of the biggest questions surrounding Liverpool’s squad ahead of the new season is how many opportunities young players will receive under Iraola.

Lynch believes Nyoni’s performances have placed him in a position where regular involvement is realistic.

“I think Iraola’s system’s going to demand it and I think he’s good enough to do so. So really really excited to see where he goes.”

The Liverpool journalist also praised Nyoni’s performance against Leeds, particularly his pass that created an opportunity for Jeremie Frimpong.

“He plays the pass, which I think it was Anfield Sector said it was kind of Rodri-esque. I thought it was a really good shout. It reminded me of Rodri in that position outside the box and basically setting up the goal.”

For Liverpool, Nyoni’s emergence provides another example of the value of the academy pathway. His summer performances have changed expectations, with a player who was once viewed as a future prospect now pushing to become a genuine first team option.

The challenge now is maintaining that development while managing the demands of Premier League football. Based on his USA tour performances, Nyoni has given Iraola a decision to make, and one Liverpool supporters will be excited to see unfold.
