Peyton Watson Explains Why Kyrie Irving Is The Toughest Player He’s Ever Guarded

Peyton Watson is widely regarded as one of the most promising young wings in the NBA. Although this year’s offseason was marked by prolonged contract talks and the inevitable drama that follows, Watson now finds himself in a new environment after being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers .

While joining the Cavs could be a phenomenal opportunity for Peyton Watson, it is worth acknowledging his time spent with the Denver Nuggets . Having established himself as an elite two-way player over the 2025-26 season, Watson’s credibility as a versatile defender undoubtedly boosted his overall stock.

Because of his ability to guard multiple positions, Peyton Watson has often faced some of the league’s best offensive players. Thus, when asked who he considered the toughest player to guard on a recent episode of the “ Curious Mike ” podcast with Michael Porter Jr. , Watson had to give a shout-out to one of the league’s most creative scorers.

“Definitely, Kyrie Irving is on top of that list,”  Watson stated.  “Bro, because you can literally just play perfect defense and he’s just a basketball savant. He’s got the most sophisticated and most refined game that I feel like I’ve ever seen.”

“That’s one of those guys that you look at and say, and I use this all the time, but the best of the best, bro, their talent is in their fingertips,” Watson continued.  “It’s like he touches that ball, and he’s just like a painter with an open canvas, and they’re just out there playing like it’s art, and Kyrie’s one of those guys. Super tough to guard.”

Kyrie Irving ‘s reputation as an offensive player often precedes him. While boasting arguably the best handle in NBA history, Irving is also an immensely versatile scorer. From elite footwork and three-point shooting to an incredible layup package, including off-hand finishing, many attest to Kyrie Irving’s scoring ability .

Given that Irving didn’t play during the 2025-26 season, Peyton Watson may have faced the nine-time All-Star while he was still finding his place in Denver’s rotation. Although Watson has undoubtedly improved by leaps and bounds, there is reason to believe that he would still struggle against the veteran.

As challenging as guarding Irving was, the nine-time All-Star was far from being the first major challenge he faced as a defender. That honor was reserved for Michael Porter Jr., whom Peyton Watson admittedly struggled against in his first matchup with the forward.

“I remember the first night we met each other; you [Porter Jr.] invited me out to Mizu in Denver,” Watson began.  “We had a good dinner. And I remember, the next day, I was flying to L.A., and you were flying somewhere else, but you were like, ‘I wanted to get in the gym tomorrow before my flight, but my flight’s early.’ I said, ‘Me too.’ And you said, ‘Let’s just get in the gym at 6 AM.'”

“We went to the gym; we shot a little bit. I remember my manager came; he rebounded for us, we shot a little bit, and then we started playing one-on-one. I remember thinking in my head, ‘I know he’s the guy. I know he starts for our team. I’m about to come in this gym and get on his a–.’ I remember that s–t like it was yesterday. And I came into that gym, and you tore my a– up.”

During his tenure with the Denver Nuggets, Michael Porter Jr. primarily served as an off-ball and perimeter threat. However, this doesn’t take away from his reputation as an elite scorer. Hence, when facing the forward, Peyton Watson received a brutal reality check but also learned a valuable lesson.

The matchup with Porter Jr. set the tone for Peyton Watson’s development, as the 23-year-old revealed how it inspired him to focus on training and improvement. When you consider that he averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game in his first season as a key starter for the Nuggets, his efforts certainly paid off.

These experiences will prove worthwhile now that Peyton Watson begins a new chapter in his career. Since he is likely to be a vital piece in Cleveland’s starting lineup , the Cavaliers will hope the 23-year-old can step up and contribute to winning.
