Patrick Queen opens up on Steelers new defensive scheme

Following a frustrating season plagued by miscommunication on defense, the Pittsburgh Steelers entered training camp under a revamped defensive regime. New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham has wasted no time installing a detail-heavy philosophy designed to rebuild clarity across every level of the unit.

For linebacker Patrick Queen, Day 1 of camp provided an immediate preview of Graham’s teaching methodology. Rather than focusing solely on assignments, Graham’s approach ensures defenders fully grasp the tactical rationale behind every call.

In a video shared by Christoper Carter on his “ Locked on Steelers ” podcast, Queen is asked about working with Graham.

“He's throwing a lot of different things out there, but it's all stuff that makes sense and all stuff that he's focused, homing in on the details and making sure everybody understand that this is why we doing it,” Queen explained following practice. “Just making sure every guy understands their job and what the other guy on doing their job. And just making sure we all understand what's what everybody on the defense is doing.”

Carter felt the results were apparent early on, with the defense controlling competitive drills and linebackers consistently disrupting passes. For a unit working through new terminology and installing new packages, the early cohesion marks a promising departure from last year’s operational breakdowns.

“Yeah, we good, we confident, you know everything they've been going over at OTA’s all the way through now,” Queen said. “Um you know is everything is about detail and stuff. So we all you know feel like we on one page with everything.”

While Queen pushed back on the idea that he personally required a reboot, he acknowledged that the coaching overhaul provides fresh competitive energy for a group eager to re-establish its dominant standard.

“I didn't really need a fresh start. You know, anytime something doesn't go right in the season, you going to be pissed off cuz you're trying to win,” Queen said. “I think a fresh start is nice, new faces, and it's kind of a point of motivation to go out there and prove yourself over and over again.”
