Report: Movement toward Lakers-Jonathan Kuminga deal has 'stalled

With each passing week this summer, it has seemed less likely that the Los Angeles Lakers will acquire forward Jonathan Kuminga. They have reportedly engaged in talks with the Atlanta Hawks regarding a potential sign-and-trade deal, but nothing has materialized, and there have been conflicting reports about why an agreement hasn't been reached.

It does seem like Kuminga's camp is looking for a contract in the neighborhood of $20 million, which seems hefty, given that he's never been a consistent starter, has been benched multiple times and has reportedly had attitude problems. Still, it looks the Lakers continue to want him, though it is debatable how strongly they want to acquire him.

According to Anthony Slater of ESPN , movement toward a deal between Kuminga and the Lakers "has remained stalled for weeks."

"It has reached the second month of what has become a second consecutive prolonged Kuminga free agency process. The Lakers met with Kuminga in the early hours of free agency, pitching him on a high-minutes role for a high-profile fringe contender in desperate need of athletic help on the wing. The opportunity appealed to Kuminga, but the sign-and-trade contract offer (years, money, package going back to Atlanta) didn't satisfy all sides. The Lakers remain interested in him, league sources said, but movement toward a deal has remained stalled for weeks."

As Slater noted, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves are also interested in Kuminga.

Last summer, Kuminga was engaged in a contract standoff with the Golden State Warriors that didn't end until he finally agreed to a two-year, $46.8 million deal on Sept. 30. After playing in just 20 of their first 51 games, he was traded to the Hawks in February.

The 23-year-old former lottery pick has a career average of 12.5 points in 22.1 minutes a game on 50.2% field-goal shooting and 33.2% from 3-point range.
