Seattle Mariners Find Their Spark in 4-2 Win Against Detroit Tigers

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners  were able to display success in every facet of a very eventful game, which resulted in a 4-2 win for the home squad against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners and Tigers went through the top of the sixth without scoring a run, which gave Seattle a 14.2-inning streak without a run post-trade deadline, including an 8-0 loss against the Tigers on Tuesday.

Seattle broke that streak with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Mariners left fielder Randy Arozarena hit a double and right fielder Dominic Canzone was intentionally walked so Detroit reliever Brenan Hanifee could face center fielder Julio Rodriguez.

Rodriguez made the Tigers pay for that decision immediately and hit a three-run, first-pitch, opposite-field shot to right field to give the M's a 3-0 lead.

"I had no emotions, honestly," Rodriguez said after the game Wednesday. " ... Because if I start getting emotional about it, I feel like that plays right into their hands. I just tried to stay focus and just tried to get my pitch and execute."

The 2025 All-Star struck out five, walked one, hit three batters and allowed three hits in seven innings of work. His shutout outing was bolstered by a stellar defensive showcase by his corner outfielders.

In the top of the fourth, Canzone delivered a rocket from right field to keep Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres from advancing to second.

The next at-bat, Arozarena delivered a throw to third baseman Brendan Donovan from left field to get out Torres, who attempted to stretch to third from first on a single hit by designated hitter Dillon Dingler.

Two batters later, Arozarena made a leaping grab at the left field wall to rob a potential three-run homer hit by Tigers left fielder Riley Greene.

"Overall, I think it was a great defensive inning," Arozarena said in a postgame interview via interpreter Freddy Llanos. "The other team put some good bats to the ball. ... Overall, just the whole team, it was important to keep the score at zero."

— MLB (@MLB) August 6, 2026 Woo's shutout seven-inning gem rewarded the defense, then the game took an interesting turn in the ninth inning.

In the top of the eighth, after three Detroit batters and catcher Cal Raleigh were hit by pitches throughout the game, Mariners reliever Gabe Speier plunked a fifth batter, Torres. That resulted in the Tigers second baseman getting in Raleigh's face, which cleared the benches and the bullpens.

No punches were thrown, but umpires made the decision to eject Speier from the game after issuing warnings to both benches. This brought out Seattle manager Dan Wilson, who was tossed after protesting his reliever being sent off.

"It's always frustrating when your guy's the guy that gets thrown out," Wilson said after the game. "I think their guy hit somebody and there's no consequences. Just frustrating. I was just glad that we were able to come out of that. Even though Bazardo gave up the homer, able to get out of that inning. ... It was situation where they felt one way and I didn't and that's kind of the way it went."

Dingler, the first Detroit batter up after the scuffle, hit a two-run homer to left-center field to cut Seattle's lead to 3-2. Bazardo struck out Greene looking for the final out of the inning.

Mariners shortstop Colt Emerson bolstered the Mariners lead back to multiple runs after he hit a solo home run to right field, which resulted in the eventual final of 4-2.

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) August 6, 2026 Andres Munoz took the mound for the ninth and struck out the first two Tigers batters up before Cole Young capped off a solid defensive night for the team my making a diving grab and the throw to first for the game-clinching groundout.

"It's been an ugly season in terms of what we expected and what we wanted," Woo said in a postgame interview. "But we still can do what we want to do in terms of (what) the American League looks like and what the (AL West) looks like. That's the weird thing about baseball."

Seattle improved to 56-59 with the win and pulled to within 2.5 games of first place in the American League West and one game of the final AL wild card spot.

The Mariners will look to clinch their second-straight series win in the rubber match against Detroit at 1:10 p.m. PT on Thursday at T-Mobile Park. Bryce Miller will start for Seattle and Framber Valdez will start for the Tigers.
