The Pro Bowl, formerly a tackle game, and more recently, a flag football and assorted competition event, will be discontinued, the NFL said in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon.
Instead of a flag football game, the NFL will try to elevate the status of what it means to be elected a Pro Bowler. There will be 88 players selected and no replacement selections with players, coaches and fans each continuing to account for one-third of the voting.

"By limiting the honor to the 88 players originally selected, the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon will return its focus squarely to recognizing the league’s most outstanding performers, reinforcing the significance of an achievement held in especially high regard by players themselves," the statement continued. "As part of that focus, the NFL will no longer stage an AFC vs. NFC Pro Bowl game. Instead, the league will place greater emphasis on the moment a player is selected, the recognition that accompanies that distinction and bringing the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon class together to celebrate the achievement."
Players will still be brought together in Los Angeles to be recognized as Pro Bowlers, but there won't be an official AFC vs. NFC flag football game.
The NFL's elimination of the Pro Bowl games comes after a push to make the football game more interesting for fans. Declining viewership in the event in recent years may have been a deciding factor in eliminating the game.
Now, this doesn't mean the NFL is pulling its support for flag football; in fact, quite the opposite. Instead, the league will strive to highlight the sport before its introduction at the world level at the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in L.A.
"The NFL will also continue expanding its support for flag football as the sport builds toward its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games," the statement read. "While the Pro Bowl and flag football serve distinct purposes, programming around both will complement the weekend in Los Angeles and create opportunities for Pro Bowl players to engage with the sport. Flag football events highlighting multiple levels of the sport will also take place across Pro Bowl weekend and Super Bowl week in Los Angeles, including a showcase of the professional flag league the NFL is creating in partnership with TMRW Sports."
Interestingly, Peyton Manning's involvement with flag football and the NFL will continue. Manning is one of several prominent investors in TMRW Sports, which was created with the purpose of growing flag football on a global scale.
