Real Madrid temporarily pause move for Man City midfielder to prioritise winger signing

According to Jose Felix Diaz of AS , Real Madrid have temporarily slowed their pursuit of Rodri as the club concentrates on finalising the signing of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.

While the Spanish midfielder remains a priority for Jose Mourinho’s squad, club officials have decided to complete the Ivorian’s arrival before reopening negotiations with Manchester City.

Diomande agreement nears completion

The transfer of Diomande has entered its final stages , with personal terms already fully agreed.

The 21-year-old has accepted a five-year contract with Real Madrid, and only the final legal and administrative details remain before the move can be officially completed.

The original expectation was that the deal would be wrapped up earlier this week. However, disagreements over several contractual clauses between the two clubs delayed the process longer than anticipated.

Despite the setback, Real Madrid remain confident the transfer will be completed in time for Diomande to join Mourinho’s squad before the end of the week.

Rodri talks on hold

Attention has therefore shifted away from Rodri, at least temporarily. Initial contact with Manchester City had been expected to begin this week , but those discussions have now been postponed while the club finalises other transfer business.

The delay does not reflect any change in Real Madrid’s intentions.

Following weeks of internal debate, club president Florentino Perez recently approved the operation, with Rodri now viewed as the ideal midfielder to complete Mourinho’s squad.

€100 million operation?

Rodri’s performances during the World Cup played a decisive role in changing opinions inside Valdebebas.

The midfielder went from being considered an unlikely target to becoming the Merengues’ preferred option after his outstanding displays in the semi-finals and final convinced even the club’s remaining sceptics.

His current level, physical condition and leadership qualities have removed many of the doubts that previously surrounded a deal.

The Spaniard’s credentials have only strengthened his case. Alongside his Ballon d’Or triumph in 2024, Rodri also collected the Golden Ball at the 2026 World Cup, reinforcing the club’s belief that he remains one of the world’s elite midfielders.

Any eventual transfer is expected to represent an investment of around €100 million, including fees and salary.

Official presentations delayed

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s new signings will have to wait a little longer for their official presentations.

With Perez currently away from Madrid, the traditional unveiling ceremonies and photo opportunities have been postponed.

The Merengues intend to present all of its new arrivals together once the president returns, although some of the newcomers could make their unofficial debut before then, including in the upcoming pre-season fixture against Fiorentina.
