The Los Angeles Lakers have been extremely active this summer and have made several moves they believe will be crucial during the Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves era. However, the Lakers are still trying to complete one of their biggest moves by adding Jonathan Kuminga, who they have pursued for more than a month.

There have been several obstacles throughout the process, whether it is Kuminga’s contract demands or the Atlanta Hawks ’ willingness to complete a sign-and-trade. Kuminga is seeking a significant payday in free agency.

“Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic. Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga," NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.

The Lakers are reportedly unwilling to meet the exact contract number Kuminga is seeking, but they have still put an offer on the table to try and get a deal completed.

“The Lakers have offered Jonathan Kuminga a contract via sign-and-trade that would pay him around $45 million. Los Angeles is willing to send Jarred Vanderbilt alongside draft capital to the Hawks for Kuminga, who must sign at least a three-year deal in sign-and-trade agreements," Sidery wrote.

With Los Angeles showing strong interest in Kuminga, the process has become a lengthy one. Lakers insider Jovan Buha recently discussed concerns surrounding whether Kuminga would be the right fit for the roster.

“The most important thing is Kuminga's mindset, his commitment to playing the role that the Lakers need from him. They need him to be their Aaron Gordon, their Andrew Wiggins. Buha said. "And I don't know if he is ready to commit to that role. You also see the downside. If he's not rebounding, if he's not making the extra pass, if he's not playing team basketball then it's just the wrong fit.”

Kuminga would have to be willing to adjust certain parts of his game, but at his age, he may be hesitant to completely change his role. The Lakers envision him becoming part of their starting lineup alongside Reaves and Doncic.

Buha believes Kuminga may not yet be mature enough to fully embrace a different role than the one he has had throughout his career. Kuminga has tremendous potential, but questions surrounding his maturity and willingness to adapt could be a reason for concern within the Lakers organization.
