Dodgers Trade Acquisition Dominant Through 2 Triple-A Outings

The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for right-handed reliever Seth Halvorsen last week, and he is already impressing through two appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Halvorsen came to the Dodgers on July 21, and made his debut for the Comets two days later. He threw just 11 pitches in his first outing with the organization, getting three outs in a close game, and came back onto the mound Sunday.

The right-hander came into the game with a three-run lead, and got four outs including his first strikeout with the team. Oklahoma City went on to lose the game, but plenty of positives came from Halvorsen’s performance.

He used his four-seamer, slider and splitter during the outing, and each pitch showed an uptick in velocity compared to the rest of the season. His fastball averaged 100.2 mph on the day, and both his slider and splitter averaged more than two mph faster than his yearly average.

Halvorsen has made 18 appearances in Triple-A this season, all of which came in the Pacific Coast League, and has a 1.80 ERA through those outings, which is extremely impressive given the harsh pitching conditions across the league.

How Has Seth Halvorsen Performed in MLB This Year?

Prior to his move to Los Angeles, Halvorsen appeared in 21 games for the Colorado Rockies, though his outings in the big leagues didn’t go as smoothly as in Triple-A. He posted a 4.74 ERA through 19 innings pitched, and struggled to command the ball throughout his stay in the majors.

He walked 15 batters, bringing his walk rate to 15.6%—among the worst in the league. The Dodgers may have found a fix, at least so far, as he has only walked one batter and issued 12 balls in 37 pitches.

If Halvorsen continues to improve, the Dodgers could very well call him up before the end of the season—especially if their bullpen continues to struggle as much as it did on Sunday . The Dodgers’ bullpen allowed seven unanswered runs on Sunday, leading to a loss in a series finale against the New York Mets.
