Before the Patriots' first training camp practice a couple weeks ago, owner Robert Kraft said the team already made Gonzalez an offer that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. However, the two sides have yet to come to an agreement.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was asked about Gonzalez's current contract situation, as well as his own future negotiations, on Wednesday.
"I'm not thinking about that right now. I mean, I'm a big fan of Gonzo and how things are playing out, so I respect him for being out here competing and wanting to practice," Maye replied, via the team's official website. "I think that speaks a lot for him wanting to be here, and I think, like I said, he's one of the best corners in the league. So, I'm looking forward to playing with him, and I'm glad he's on our team."
"I don't think it's hard not to think about it," Maye added when asked about his contract future. "For me, I try to be in the present every day. That's why they call it a present, man. It's a gift. So, I just try to be here, be where my feet are, and trying to get better and better."
The Patriots will open up their 2026 regular-season schedule with a Week 1 Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9.
