With the trade deadline less than one week away, the Houston Astros plan to be buyers.
ESPN's Alden Gonzalez wrote Tuesday that the Astros' general manager, Dana Brown, is not prepared to trade for an impending free agent, however.
Their biggest need is in the outfield.
"The Astros began the week with a combined .664 OPS from their outfielders, the worst mark in the majors," Gonzalez wrote.

"Astros GM Dana Brown is on the record saying he expects to be a buyer leading up to the trade deadline, and a source said that will be the case so long as the team remains within striking distance of a playoff spot heading into its weekend series against the division-leading Rangers," Gonzalez added. If so, they'll target an outfielder above all else."
Yordan Alvarez has arguably been the best hitter in the Majors this season and should be the frontrunner for AL MVP. But he's made just 17 apperances in left field this season and 89 at DH.

The Astros have no reason to risk Alvarez's health by putting him on the field. Despite his power bat from the left side of the batter's box, Gonzalez reports the Astros would prefer to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder.
"Given that their farm system is one of the worst in the industry, though, securing a quality one in this market could be a major challenge," Gonzalez added. "The Astros prefer a left-handed hitter, but that doesn't have to be the case."
Despite a 53-55 record, the Astros are just two games behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. They are an intriguing club to watch this week.
