Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Tour record which is ominous for the rest of the Tour Championship field

He might not have been at his brilliant best so far, but Scottie Scheffler is well in the mix at the Tour Championship.

The world number one has been remarkably consistent all year and is many people’s choice for the Player of the Year award. But going into the playoffs, he had only one win to his name this season.

But Scheffler has found another gear in the last few weeks. He won the FedEx St Jude by nine strokes, and finished T12 at the BMW Championship while suffering from hand, foot and mouth disease. This week he’s fully healthy, and he’s two shots back of the lead through 36 holes.

At this point in the tournament, he’s the favourite to win it, and his record on the PGA Tour in this very scenario is ominous for the rest of the field.

Scheffler’s score of eight under par puts him tied for fifth at the Tour Championship, two strokes back of the leading Viktor Hovland. And judging by his record, he’s overwhelmingly likely to go on to win at East Lake.

Of the last ten times the American has been in the top five heading into the weekend on the PGA Tour, he has won seven of the tournaments. That’s an astounding number, and one that shows that when he’s feeling it, Scheffler is nearly impossible to stop.

He had a clean scorecard on Thursday at East Lake to put himself in a good position, but a few uncharacteristic mistakes with his irons during his second round stalled his charge up the leaderboard for a while.

But Scheffler recovered his form on the back nine to shoot a 67 and keep himself well in the mix. He’s the FedEx Cup point leader and has the chance to win the playoff finale with two more days to play.
