Mkhitaryan coy on Inter future: ‘No point making long-term plans’

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has admitted he cannot yet say whether the coming campaign will be the last of his career, insisting there is little sense in planning too far ahead at this stage.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , the Inter midfielder, who has extended his contract by a further year , explained that he was given no assurances over his role.

“I didn’t receive any guarantee, it wouldn’t even have been right, because I have to show on the pitch whether I deserve a place in the team or not,” he said. “But I feel I can still play at a good level for another year, and so, together with the club, I decided to stay one more season. Then we’ll see.”

Mkhitaryan targets four fronts with Inter

Fresh from a season that yielded two trophies, the veteran is setting his sights high.

“We’ve never held back,” he said. “We’ll try to play at our best on four fronts, I include the Supercoppa as well as the Champions League. You can’t know what the future holds; there are years when you win and years when you lose. The important thing is to be ready for every challenge, and we are. Always.”

As for whether retirement looms, Mkhitaryan was non-committal.

“I don’t know. It’s impossible to decide today,” he said. “I’ll have to see how I feel at the end of this season. At my age, there’s no point making long-term plans.”
