Oscar Piastri Explains His Blunt Radio Outburst After Nightmare 2026 Hungarian GP

Oscar Piastri arrived at the Hungaroring having won there before – his maiden Formula 1 victory came on this same circuit back in 2024 – and Sunday looked like it might deliver another chapter worth remembering. It delivered one, just not the kind he wanted.

Piastri seized the lead early after Norris ran wide at the beginning of the race, with the Australian making the most of his rival’s error to move to the front of the field off the pack. From there, the race fell apart in stages: a hard-tyre stint with no pace, a backmarker hit that cost him several seconds, and then, on lap 56 of 70, a gearbox failure that stranded his McLaren on the exit of Turn 3 and ended any remaining hope of a result.

His radio communications throughout the race were interesting enough to earn their place in the broadcast coverage. When Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman tangled ahead of him at Turn 2 on lap 39 and the Williams cut across his path, Piastri’s response over the team channel was immediate: “Get out of the way, you f**king idiot.”

The Sainz incident cost him several seconds on the road and handed Norris the window to pit and reclaim the net lead. Norris did not give it back.

Piastri on What Went Wrong

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, Piastri explained how his day unravelled. “Yes, [the start] was definitely the highlight of my race, and it went pretty downhill from there,” he said. “The pace on the hard tyres just was nowhere. Getting taken out by a backmarker is never really one of the things you think can go wrong, but I was proven wrong. And then obviously with the gearbox, so not the easiest of days.”

When pressed on whether he was frustrated by the timing of his second pit stop – and a radio call where he asked his engineers “Are you guys factoring that in?” – Piastri said: “No, I mean… …by Carlos, and you know, in the moment I was hoping maybe they would not pit Lando because of that incident, to at least give me the chance to stay in the lead, but I think that’s not very reasonable. I was more just very upset in the moment about what had happened. I think the timing of my pit stop was fine. We wanted to beat Lewis, and that’s what we needed to do today.”

An earlier radio message during the pit-stop window had already made his mindset unmistakably clear. When his engineer raised the question of Leclerc’s position, Piastri shot back: “I don’t really care about Leclerc. I just want the best chance to try and beat Lando. That’s the most important thing at the moment.”

Looking Forward

Norris secured his first win of the 2026 season while championship leader Kimi Antonelli took the final podium spot, and Piastri left Hungary with nothing. Before the gearbox gave out, he had been running in clean air with a genuine chance of winning. The Hungaroring tends to reward the driver who stays cleanest. On Sunday, he didn’t even have a chance to.
