Spence, at 25 and an England international, seemed to fit several of Liverpool’s more immediate concerns. He offers cover at right back, where uncertainty remains, and can also operate on the left, a versatility that often becomes more valuable the deeper a season goes. In a squad with clear homegrown pressures and visible structural gaps, the appeal was easy to understand. At around £35m, the numbers looked manageable, too.

That is what makes this update feel significant. A sensible transfer is not always the right one, of course, but in Liverpool’s current circumstances practicality ought to have some value. Modern squad-building is often described in the language of elite recruitment and market opportunities, yet title challenges are usually sustained by accumulation, by filling weak points before they become fractures.

Liverpool transfer strategy under scrutiny

There is a tactical dimension to this beyond mere depth. Liverpool are entering a new era under Andoni Iraola, and any head coach inheriting a side in transition requires players capable of absorbing varied demands. Full-backs, in particular, are no longer simple touchline runners. They are pressure valves, build-up options and defensive stabilisers. A player able to function on both flanks has obvious value in that context.

Defensive depth remains a pressing issue

Even if Liverpool believe Conor Bradley can reclaim the right-back role, the season demands more than faith. Availability matters as much as talent. Jeremie Frimpong brings qualities of his own, though defensive security has hardly ceased to be a discussion point. On the opposite flank, depth is similarly open to question.

And this is where transfer windows are judged, not by the drama they generate but by the order they impose. Liverpool need reinforcement in defence, and perhaps beyond it. A centre-back, midfield support and attacking depth all have their place in the conversation, but the immediate sense is of a squad still awaiting basic repair work.

Spence may not have been the perfect answer. He may not even have been the preferred one. Yet if Liverpool decline that sort of solution, then what follows has to be persuasive, because the season is close and the margins at the top of English football are ruthlessly narrow.

Our View

From a Liverpool perspective, this report lands with a weary sort of familiarity. Djed Spence was never the sort of signing to set pulses racing, but that may have been precisely the point. Supporters can live without spectacle in the market if the squad starts to make more sense. Right now, it still does not fully make sense.

There is always the possibility that the club have a better plan. Recruitment departments do not, in fairness, operate according to public logic alone. They may see flaws in Spence’s profile, or believe the money is better deployed elsewhere. If so, fine. But Liverpool have drifted into that dangerous territory where every sensible missed opportunity sharpens attention on what has not yet been fixed.

An unsure fan would probably say this is less about Spence himself and more about confidence in the process. If Liverpool pass on a player who looks useful, adaptable and reasonably priced, then supporters need to see the alternative quite quickly. Otherwise, the fear grows that obvious needs are being left to harden into recurring problems.

There is enough quality in the squad to compete, and Iraola is walking into a group with serious talent. But talent needs structure around it. At the moment, the concern is that Liverpool still look one or two practical decisions short of the balance required to navigate a long season properly.
