LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- To the surprise of some New York City subway riders, cashless vending machines are starting to pop up at certain stations, selling all kinds of drinks and snacks.
Back in the day, the little news stand stores were in almost 300 train stations. Now, there are just a few dozen.
"We love the old newsstands. They kept disappearing, and then really disappeared during COVID, and they didn't want to come back," MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said.
Eyewitness News reporter Michelle Charlesworth started punching in different options at the vending machines installed at the F line at Second Avenue on the Lower East Side, and it looks like the food runs around $3, and the most expensive drink, a protein drink, is $4.50.
Lieber is optimistic about the new vending machines and says they are low cost.
He says right now these vending machines are in three spots, and at least at least 20 to 30 more are coming.
