Mike Norvell's FSU future rides on overlooked QB Ashton Daniels

Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels and coach Mike Norvell enter the 2026 season with something significant in common.

They both need this year to work.

For Daniels, a graduate transfer with one final season of eligibility, it is an opportunity to prove he can be more than a capable starter. For Norvell, it may be his best chance to restore momentum to a program that has endured back-to-back losing seasons and growing questions about his future in Tallahassee.

That shared urgency makes Daniels and Norvell a natural fit heading into a pivotal season for Florida State .

After consecutive disappointing campaigns, Norvell faces arguably the most pressure of his seven-year tenure. Despite a hefty buyout reportedly north of $51 million, expectations remain high at FSU, and another losing season would only intensify scrutiny surrounding the Seminoles' head coach.

The encouraging sign for Norvell is his return to play-calling duties and the belief that he has found the right quarterback to operate his offense.

Daniels arrives in Tallahassee with plenty of experience but still something to prove. He has started 23 games during his college career, compiling a 5-18 record at Stanford before spending last season at Auburn, where he took over as the starter for the Tigers’ final three games after redshirting.

While his overall record leaves plenty to be desired, Daniels showed flashes of the player FSU believes he can become.

In a close loss to Vanderbilt, Daniels threw for 353 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns while leading Auburn to an overtime battle with the Commodores. He closed the season with perhaps his most impressive performance against Alabama, throwing for 253 yards and rushing for 108 more.

For a Florida State team that lost four one-score games last season, those performances offer hope. The Seminoles did not receive consistent quarterback play in 2025, and it is reasonable to wonder how different the season might have looked with a quarterback capable of extending plays and producing explosive offense.

That is exactly what Daniels brings to the table.

"I've been really pleased with just his mindset and seeing his confidence in what we're asking him to do, seeing hisconfidence in what he knows he can do and how that's really spread throughout just our football team," Norvell said during his annual luncheon on Monday.

"You can talk about an individual, you can say, hey, I think he's going to be this, I think he's going to be that to a team, to guys in a locker room, but when he shows up, and he goes, and he does it. That's where it becomes his."

Ashton Daniels is playing with the 'right edge'

Norvell has long favored athletic quarterbacks who can create both through the air and on the ground. Former QB Jordan Travis helped elevate the Seminoles during the program's resurgence, but since Travis’ departure, FSU has struggled to find a comparable answer at the position.

Recent transfer additions have not delivered as expected. DJ Uiagalelei failed to meet lofty expectations, and Tommy Castellanos was unable to provide the spark Florida State hoped for last season.

Daniels represents another swing in the portal, but unlike some of his predecessors, he arrives with little national hype.

Even after winning the starting job over Kevin Sperry , a quarterback recruited by Norvell and his staff, Daniels has largely flown under the radar. Despite praise from coaches and teammates throughout the offseason, he failed to generate much buzz among ACC observers and was left out of several preseason quarterback rankings.

“You see that stuff every single day,” Daniels said during the ACC Kickoff. “What separates the best from the worst is how you handle it. I saw that. I don’t care. What shows is the actions on the field. Using that as bulletin board material? Yeah, that’s in the back of my mind.”

That mindset may be exactly what Florida State needs.

Daniels possesses a calm, mature presence that comes with being a Stanford graduate, but he also carries the competitive edge of a player still trying to define his legacy. He has heard the doubts. He understands the questions surrounding his ability to win at a high level. Now he has an opportunity to answer them.

"I mean, he definitely has the right edge and the things that I want to see from him, and really all players on our team, just to go prove and show all of who they are," Norvell said. "He doesn't need to come and work to be anything different, but I truly believe if he'll just continue to grow, he's going to put himself in a position to have a tremendous year."

The challenge will not be easy.

Florida State faces a demanding schedule that includes games against SMU , Miami and Alabama , among others. If Daniels is going to break through, he will have to do it against some of the nation's best competition.

Still, college football has recently provided plenty of examples of quarterbacks transforming programs in a single season. Miami's rise behind Cam Ward and Indiana's success with transfer quarterback Fernando Mendoza showed how dramatically a team’s fortunes can change when it finds the right player under center.

No one is suggesting Daniels must become a Heisman Trophy candidate or the top quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft. But for Florida State, competent and consistent quarterback play could be the difference between another disappointing season and a return to nation...
