Grading the Cowboys' $105 million commitment to Quinnen Williams

In a roundabout way, the Dallas Cowboys swapped out Micah Parsons for Quinnen Williams.

Trading away a homegrown edge rusher to the Green Bay Packers delivered the extra draft capital to be comfortable swinging a deal for Williams before the 2025 NFL trading deadline. Owner and de facto general manager Jerry Jones found his new star, trading first and second-round picks for the four-time Pro Bowler.

There are plenty of differences between Parsons and Williams, even beyond their different spots along the defensive front. On Monday, we got one more. Williams did what Parsons could not; he signed a mega-deal contract extension to stay in Dallas:

Williams had no guaranteed money remaining beyond 2026 on the four-year, $96 million deal that made him the league's second-highest-paid defensive tackle three years earlier. His $105.9 million deal makes him the third highest paid interior lineman in 2026, behind only Chris Jones and Jalen Carter . His $35.3 million annual average salary is second to only Jones. His $101 million in reported guarantees is second to only Carter .

It's a risky deal for a player who has been very good, but hasn't reached the heights Jones has or possess the youth of Carter, who is more than three years younger. It's also one Jones may have been compelled to make after watching his defense fall apart last season.

Will Williams prove worthy of his new mega-deal? Or is he doomed to be a standout on a bad team through the first decade of his career?

The deal: Dallas Cowboys sign DT Quinnen Williams to a three-year, $105.9 million extension ($101 million guaranteed)

Williams' 12 sacks in 2022 were an outlier, but they showcase why he's such a valued presence in the middle of the line. He's had between 46 and 71 pressures each of the last four seasons with a pressure rate of at least 12 percent every year. Jones, by contrast, has had a pressure rate over 12.0 percent just once in the last five seasons. Maxx Crosby, Zach Allen, and Leonard Williams all had lower rates in 2025 .

That's just part of the equation. Handling run-stuff duties is enormous for any defensive tackle. Williams was on the field for 214 run plays last season. He was credited with 44 stops, 16th-most among linemen despite having fewer reps than all but two other members of the top 20 in that ranking.

His 20.6 percent stop rate was better than Davis (19.1 percent), Cam Heyward (19 percent), Derrick Brown (16.7 percent) or Leonard Williams (19.8 percent) . Though he'll turn 29 this December, he's played at least 15 games in each of the last five seasons. The Cowboys should be able to wring a few very productive seasons out of this deal before age and general wear and tear begin to chip away at his performance.

That's great! But is it worth more than $100 million in guarantees? Williams is a rising tide for a Dallas ocean that had been reduced to a puddle in recent years. It ranked dead last in expected points added (EPA) per snap last season, one year after finishing 31st in points allowed . Williams arrived before Week 11 last season. Let's look at the impact he had on that awful unit:

Bad news! It wasn't by much!

The Dallas defense was still a bottom three group, even with Williams playing up to his lofty standard. He played seven games in Arlington and faced a single top 10 offense -- and that was a fading Detroit Lions team. This could be a huge expenditure for a player who may be limited to being the difference between bad and below average.

That said, great players deserve great contracts. Williams has been great, if underappreciated while playing with flawed teams. Chris Jones is a useful comparison. He continued to thrive through his late 20s and into his early 30s, which is where Williams will make the bulk of his Cowboys money. He'll likely prove worthy of a top three contract in the next three seasons. The question is whether it will make a difference for Dallas.

Jerry Jones loves his stars. That's why he's got nearly 38 percent of his 2026 salary cap tied up across four players . It's why he was already an estimated $15.4 million over next year's cap even before re-signing Williams -- and that doesn't factor in whatever his decision will be with star wideout George Pickens, who will play 2026 under the franchise tag. The contract may make sense, but the setting could be a problem.

The Cowboys have been trying and failing to turn a handful of stars into a constellation for... huh, more than three decades, now . This latest monster signing could wind up being another symptom of Jerry-itis, which has slowly (and occasionally, very quickly and loudly) consumed the franchise he'd once built into a dynasty.

So, in short, it's a good contract and a logical decision from an often illogical team builder. It only makes sense if Dallas can cultivate depth despite its superstar contracts. And, even then, it feels like it's all one injury away from unraveling.
