Newcastle Lands No. 1 Midfield Target After £50 Million Offer: Breaking

Newcastle United has finally landed the experienced midfielder Matthias Jaissle, completing a major piece of its summer rebuild after the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

The Magpies entered Monday increasingly confident of signing Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones reporting that the clubs were “continuing to edge closer to agreement” over a transfer valued at approximately £50 million (€58 million).

Only hours later, Fabrizio Romano confirmed the breakthrough. Newcastle has reached a verbal agreement with City to sign Gonzalez for £47 million (€54 million) guaranteed plus another £3 million (€3.5 million) in potential add-ons.

The agreement completes a rapid acceleration in negotiations after The Athletic’s David Ornstein first reported last week that Newcastle had opened exploratory talks with City. Gonzalez initially appeared determined to remain in Manchester and fight for his place, but his position shifted as Newcastle increased its efforts to convince him and City urged him to leave.

Enzo Maresca also cleared the path for his departure when he left Gonzalez as an unused substitute in Sunday’s Premier League victory over Bournemouth, with defender Marc Guehi used in midfield instead. Meanwhile, Man City was working and has now agreed to an £86 million (€100 million) deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, making Gonzalez’s path to playing time even harder.

The 24-year-old joined City from Porto for €60 million (£52 million) in February 2025. He made 41 appearances across all competitions last season, starting 28 times, but struggled to establish himself as an automatic starter under Pep Guardiola.

Newcastle can offer precisely that role as the leading man of Jaissle’s midfield and squad outright. After selling Guimaraes to Arsenal and Tonali to Tottenham, Jaissle has been left rebuilding around youngsters including Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lewis Miley. Gonzalez now arrives as the experienced centerpiece of that new-look midfield.

Barring a late collapse during the remaining formalities, Newcastle finally has its new midfielder.
