BC football 100th celebration starts at Saturday's season-opening game

The Bakersfield College football program begins its 100th season Saturday night when the Renegades host Santa Ana in its regular-season opener at Memorial Stadium.

To celebrate this milestone, there will be a special BC Archives display with memorabilia from Renegade football history, 100th season T-shirts and a special edition football program available for purchase.

Furthermore, former Renegade football players and coaches are invited to return to the stadium with free tickets for Saturday’s game. Community organizations can also receive discounted tickets.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and kickoff is 6 p.m. BC football alumni are encouraged to arrive at the game early for an alumni social. Alumni are asked to check in at the alumni table to get a wristband for access to the event. A live Renegade pre-game show will take place from the stadium’s concourse.

"There is something special and exciting about seeing former student-athletes, coaches and our fans come together at Memorial Stadium. Saturday night is an opportunity to celebrate 100 seasons of those connections and kick off another great season of Renegade Football,” new BC Athletic Director Lynn Kennedy said.

High school girls volleyball

Late August is a prime time to see local girls volleyball teams in the early stages of the season. Many teams are playing non-league matches during the week.

Centennial hosted Clovis North on Wednesday and Thursday’s matches include Golden Valley at Rosamond, Bishop Union at Kern Valley, East at Independence, Tehachapi at Arvin, Taft at South, Chavez Collegiate at North, West at Shafter, Highland at Wonderful College Prep Academy in Delano and Immanuel at Frontier. All matches start between 6 and 7 p.m.

Multiple tournaments will be played this weekend, including an all-day Saturday event at Ridgeview High with several area teams. There is also the Clovis High Wild Wild West Showcase Friday and Saturday with Bakersfield Christian, Frontier, Liberty and Centennial involved in four separate pool-play brackets.

Each team will play three pool-play matches Friday to determine Saturday’s double-elimination bracket set-up. All matches are best two-out-of-three with first two to 25 and the third game to 15 (no caps).

BCHS, in Pool A, plays, in order, Fresno Bullard, Porterville Monache and Clovis Buchanan. Frontier, in Pool B, will face San Joaquin Memorial, Clovis and San Luis Obispo. Liberty, in Pool C, opposes Yosemite, Downey and Clovis East. Centennial, in Pool D, will meet Central East, Sylmar and Clovis West.

Saturday matches begin at 10 a.m. The gold championship finals will happen at 4 p.m. as will the silver consolation championship.

CSUB athletics

The women’s soccer team will play the first of two nonconference road games this week when it plays against Idaho at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Roadrunners are 0-2 on the season and are still seeking their first goal. CSUB lost to University of San Francisco 4-0 on Aug. 13 and then dropped its Aug. 23 home opener, 2-0 to Idaho State. After the Roadrunners play the Vandals, the team will play at Eastern Washington at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The women’s volleyball team will open its regular season on the road Friday and Saturday at the Abilene Christian University Invitational in Texas. CSUB plays Lamar and North Texas on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pacific time, then tournament host Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. Pacific on Saturday.

The men’s soccer team (1-0-1) returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against UNLV at home.

BC athletics

The women’s soccer team will open the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday on the road against Santa Barbara City. The Renegades, coached by Edgar Linares, who directed the program to an 11-8-4 overall record (7-3-4 Western State Conference) and a second-round 3C2A playoff appearance in 2025, will look to open the season with a victory. BC is 0-2-1 in its last three season-opening games, all against Pasadena City. BC defeated Santa Barbara 2-0 last season after a 5-0 loss to the Vaqueros in 2024.

The cross-country teams, women’s water polo, women’s volleyball and men’s soccer will each compete in their season-opening contests on Friday. Only women’s volleyball will have home matches as it hosts the Bakersfield Quad event Friday and Saturday. New head coach Mallori Rossi’s team will play Clovis College at 4 p.m. Friday. BC takes on San Diego Miramar at 11 a.m. and Mt. San Antonio College at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The cross-country teams will run in the Barstow College Invitational on campus beginning at 9 a.m. Friday.

BC women’s water polo will play in the College of Marin Tournament with matches against American River and Santa Rosa on Friday and more on Saturday. Men’s soccer plays in the Mt. SAC-hosted Azteca/Nike Tournament with an 8 p.m. game against Fullerton on Friday and then a game at 10 a.m. Sunday against an as-yet-undetermined opponent.
